Literature Text

Circa 2004 and a number has finally defeated us
With its dubious logic and callous attitude,
Bringing to surface a floating froth of
Our existence in the quarter-life solitude.
Here is the age of the confused lot.
This is where our sweats will clot.

It strikes us like a speeding bullet
That we don’t like ourselves like before,
Wrapped in the warm blanket of insecurity
And shame, we are not ourselves anymore.
Wondering where we will be in a year or two.
Wandering a today we are without a clue.

Lost friends and changing trends
Are traces of our only known outlet,
People we once loved and cared about
Are not exactly the greatest we have met.
Is this the beginning of the end for us?
Are they as confused and lost as us?

Working like a dog day in and night out
We look at it and wonder where we are headed,
Wanting to switch lanes yet afraid and cold
From the fears of the jobless and the dreaded.
To live a life in so much pain and bliss.
We are sure but hope we will get out of this.

Highly opinioned we start judging one another
And start making the worst of the best,
Clinging to a dreary past while fearing the future
We start liking change but at the same time detest.
Secure and glad one passing moment,
Insecure and sad we are with the next torrent.

Waiting in line for that special someone
To descend from the clouds and bless us,
We spend nights on the bed lying awake
And wondering why finding love is a ruckus.
Would it not be nice to know someone is out there?
Would it not be better to fall in love instead?

Riding the same emotion cloud a zillion times
Over we never stop thinking why and why not,
Boring our friends to the verge of suicide with
The same topics and the same selected plot.
We realize we do wrong things but we are not bad.
It would be better to be correct than to be sad.

Worried sick with plans for the future
And money to put away for the rainy days,
Stuck in the social merry-go-round till eternity
We put our plans into what the soothsayer says.
This is the world of the 20 something crowd.
We just wish we could say all this out loud.
A little poem I wrote sometime ago about people living in their 20s. A reflection of the troubled time it can be.
